Thanks to the collaboration between Gruppo Fiori and the Fs Logistics Hub, ferrous scrap, a crucial raw material for the production of new steel, travels by rail from Pomezia (Rome) to the steel mills of Northern Italy, fully embracing the principles of the circular economy and decarbonization.
The process begins with the necessary “first mile” by road, which transfers the materials from the Gruppo Fiori plant to the rail terminal, but it is over long distances that the true environmental advantage is realized. The scrap is then loaded onto trains managed by Mercitalia Shunting & Terminal and transported by rail by Mercitalia Rail to the production facilities.
The choice of intermodal rail transport is the cornerstone of this project’s sustainability: a single train can replace a large number of heavy vehicles, ensuring a massive reduction in CO2 emissions and other pollutants compared to traditional road transport.
This logistical transition not only reduces environmental impact and road congestion but also enhances the energy efficiency of the entire supply chain, aligning the steel sector with the most ambitious European sustainability goals and demonstrating how the adoption of “green” logistics solutions is essential for the future of heavy manufacturing.
